　－毒を制し命を守る女神――サソリを戴く守護者－

　エジプト神話の女神セルケトは、『真・女神転生II』では魔獣として、また『if...』では主人公のガーディアンとして登場します。戦力としてはやや中庸ながら、サソリの異形として描かれた姿は強いインパクトを残します。
　そのため、どこか不気味で恐ろしいキャラクターとして記憶されている方も多いのではないでしょうか。
　しかし本来は、守護と癒しを司る女神であり、そのギャップこそがセルケトの大きな魅力といえるでしょう。

メガテンと神話におけるセルケト

　セルケト（Serket）は、古代エジプト神話における守護と治癒、そして毒を司る女神です。頭にサソリを戴いた女性の姿、あるいは女性の頭を持つサソリとして描かれます。サソリは本来危険な存在ですが、セルケトはその毒を制御し、人々を守る力を持つと信じられていました。特に毒や病から人を守る存在として、強い信仰を集めていました。

　またセルケトは、冥界においても重要な役割を担う守護神です。太陽神の旅路や死者の世界を見守り、秩序を保つ存在とされました。とくに、混沌の象徴である蛇アペプを監視する役割を持つとされ、世界の安定を陰から支える存在でもあります。さらに、イシス、ネフティス、ネイトとともに「四人の泣く女神」の一柱に数えられ、死者を悼み守護する重要な役割を担っていました。

　『女神転生』シリーズでは、こうした神話的背景をもとにしつつも、より異形的で魔獣的な姿として描かれています。そのため本来の神聖さよりも不気味さが強調されていますが、セルケトは本来、毒を操りながら人を守る優しさと強さを併せ持つ女神です。切手に描かれるような優美な姿は、その本来の神性をよく表しているといえるでしょう。

“Selket” in Shin Megami Tensei and Egiptian Mythology

Serket is a goddess in ancient Egyptian mythology associated with protection, healing, and venom.
She is depicted either as a woman with a scorpion on her head or as a scorpion with a human head. While scorpions are dangerous, Serket was believed to control their poison and protect people, especially from venom and illness.

She also played an important role in the afterlife, guarding the journey of the dead and maintaining cosmic order. She was said to watch over the serpent Apep, a symbol of chaos, helping preserve balance in the world. Alongside Isis, Nephthys, and Neith, she was one of the “Four Mourning Goddesses” who protected and lamented the dead.

In the Shin Megami Tensei series, Serket appears in a more monstrous, beast-like form, emphasizing her eerie aspects. However, in mythology she is a gentle yet powerful protector, and her graceful depiction in art—such as on stamps—reflects her true divine nature.
