北欧神話は、もともとゲルマン民族の神話伝承に由来します。しかしヨーロッパでキリスト教が広がる中で、多くの古い神話は失われていきました。その断片を後世に伝えたのが、12〜13世紀頃にアイスランドで編纂された『エッダ』（新エッダ・古エッダ）です。
これらの文献によって、ゲルマン世界の神々や英雄の物語は「北欧神話」として今日まで知られるようになりました。
北欧神話の特徴は、厳しく荒々しい世界観にあります。神々でさえも永遠ではなく、数々の戦いの果てにラグナロク――「神々の黄昏」へと至る運命を背負っています。その運命を受け入れながら戦い続ける姿は、ヴァイキング文化の乾いた死生観をよく映し出しています。
主神オーディン、雷神トール、狡知の神ロキ、愛と魔術の女神フレイアなど、個性豊かな神々もこの神話の魅力です。こうした存在は『女神転生』シリーズでも数多く登場し、作品世界に強い印象を与えてきました。
