🦅ガルーダ Garuda　－ヴィシュヌを乗せる神鳥－

　天空を駆ける霊鳥ガルーダ――『女神転生』では、その圧倒的な速さと力で戦場を制する頼もしい存在です。
　ヴィシュヌを運ぶ聖鳥として知られるその姿の背後には、母を救うために神々と戦った壮大な神話が息づいています。

　『女神転生II』より登場するガルーダは、当初は神獣として描かれていましたが、『真・女神転生』以降のシリーズでは霊鳥として定着した存在です。高い力と素早さを兼ね備えたハイレベルの仲魔であり、戦闘において頼もしい活躍を見せてくれます。

　インド神話においては、ヴィシュヌ神を乗せる聖なる鳥として知られています。白い顔と黄金の身体を持つ人型に、鷲の頭と嘴、赤い翼と鋭い爪を備えた姿で描かれ、その威容は天空を支配する存在にふさわしいものです。ブラフマーの系譜に連なるカシュヤパ仙とヴィナターの子として生まれたとされています。しかしその誕生の背景には、母ヴィナターの苦難がありました。兄アルナの呪いや、ナーガの母カドルーとの賭けに敗れたことにより、ヴィナターはナーガたちの奴隷とされてしまいます。母を解放するためには、神々の住む天界から不死の霊薬アムリタを持ち帰る必要がありました。

　母を救うため、ガルーダは天界へと飛び立ち、神々と壮絶な戦いを繰り広げながら、ついにアムリタを手に入れます。その過程でヴィシュヌとも対峙しますが決着はつかず、やがてアムリタと高い地位を得る代わりに、ヴィシュヌの乗り物となる契約が結ばれたと伝えられています。この因縁から、蛇族ナーガはガルーダにとって永遠の敵となりました。

　現在でもガルーダは東南アジアで広く信仰されており、タイやラオス、カンボジアなどで多くの切手が発行されています。特にタイでは国家の象徴として国章にも採用されています。その姿は同国の切手にも数多く描かれ、神話と現代国家をつなぐ象徴的存在となっています。

Garuda in Shin Megami Tensei and Hindu Mythology

Garuda appears from Shin Megami Tensei II, initially classified as a Divine Beast and later established as a Bird deity in subsequent titles. Known for his high strength and speed, he is a powerful high-level ally who excels in battle.

In Hindu mythology, Garuda is the sacred bird who serves as the mount of Vishnu. He is depicted as a being with a human body—white-faced and golden-bodied—combined with the head, beak, wings, and talons of an eagle. He is the son of the sage Kashyapa and Vinata, descendants of Brahma.

His birth is tied to a tale of hardship. Due to a curse and a lost wager against Kadru, mother of the Nagas, Vinata was enslaved. To free her, Garuda set out to the heavens to obtain the nectar of immortality, Amrita. After battling the gods, he succeeded, and later formed an alliance with Vishnu, becoming his mount. From this origin, Garuda and the serpent race of the Nagas became eternal enemies.

Garuda remains an important symbol in Southeast Asia. In Thailand, he is adopted as the national emblem and is frequently depicted on stamps, representing both mythological power and cultural identity.
