👹マーシャル諸島の民話――南太平洋の怪物・美女・悪魔
－海と環礁に生きる人々が語り継いだ、奇妙な怪物と美しい女性、そして子供を丸呑みにする「悪魔」の物語。－
太平洋に浮かぶマーシャル諸島には、島や海、礁湖、サメなど、身近な自然と結びついた数多くの伝説が残されています。ギリシャ神話や北欧神話のように神々の系譜を語るというより、「なぜここに池があるのか」「なぜ島々は離れているのか」「なぜこの海域を避けるのか」といった土地の記憶を、不思議な物語として伝えているのが特徴です。
そこに登場するのは、美しい女性や勇敢な戦士だけではありません。夜の池に現れる正体不明の怪物、人間を襲う異形の存在など、『女神転生』の「悪魔」に通じるような者たちも潜んでいます。
切手で読む、マーシャル諸島の四つの民話
1997年に発行されたこの切手シートは、4枚の切手と、それぞれの伝説を記した英文の解説タブから構成されています。絵だけではなく物語そのものまで一枚のシートに収めた、いわば「読む切手」です。ここでは三つの伝説をたどったあと、最後に最もメガテン的な「アドリエの悪魔」を詳しく見てみましょう。
月夜に池を広げる怪物――The Large Pool of Mejit
メジット島に老夫婦だけが暮らしていた頃のこと。老人は、月明かりに輝く池が夜ごと大きくなっていることに気づきます。不審に思って見張っていると、そこには池を広げている巨大な怪物がいました。
老人が石を投げると怪物は激怒し、彼を家まで追いかけます。しかし老人は扉の陰に隠れ、妻を襲おうとした怪物を背後から槍で突き、ついに倒しました。その怪物が作った池は現在まで残っている――という、土地の由来を語る伝説です。
夜になると水面は月光を反射して不気味に揺れ、島の人々は今でもその場所に近づくことを避けるといわれています。怪物が消えた後も池は広がり続けたという話もあり、自然そのものが生きているかのような恐怖を伝えています。
切手の奥には、月夜の水辺に立つ黒い異形の姿が描かれています。神でも英雄でもなく、メジット島の池に棲み、夜ごと池を広げて土地の姿まで変えてしまう正体不明の怪物です。名前を持つ神というより、土地そのものに潜む怪異といった存在でしょう。メガテンの種族にあえて当てはめるなら、土地に根ざした精霊や土着の怪異を含む「地霊」が最もしっくりきます。月夜に浮かぶ黒い巨体も、いかにも仲魔として現れそうな姿です。自然と怪物がまだはっきり分けられていないような、太平洋の古い民話世界を感じさせる存在です。
美女のために島が動いた――The Beautiful Woman of Kwajalein
昔、クェゼリン環礁の小島は、現在よりずっと近くに集まっていました。そこへある日、謎めいた美しい女性が現れます。彼女を見た島々のalap（土地を管理する有力者）たちは、誰もが美女を自分だけのものにしたいと望みました。
しかし島々が近いため、彼女が現れるたびに男たちは争うことになります。そこで彼らは、自分たちの島そのものを互いに遠くへ移してしまいました。
こうしてクェゼリンの島々は現在のように離れ離れになった――という伝説です。美女をめぐる嫉妬という人間臭い感情が、環礁の地形を説明する壮大な物語へ変わっているところが面白い一話です。
サメに倒された戦士――Sharks and Lowakalle Reef
ロワカレはアルノ環礁に暮らしていた強大な戦士でした。しかしやがて故郷を襲い、財産を奪い、人を殺す恐ろしい略奪者となります。
困り果てた島民たちは、ロワカレの欲深さを利用しました。魚を切って海に撒き、多数のサメを集めておいたのです。それを知らないロワカレが海へ入ると、待ち構えていたサメたちに襲われて命を落とします。
その場所が後に「Lowakalle Reef」と呼ばれるようになったと伝えられます。怪物ではなく人間を主人公としながら、海とサメが最後には人間の暴力を裁く存在となっているのが印象的です。
太平洋にも「悪魔」がいる？――The Demon of Adrie
そして4枚の中で最も異様なのが、「The Demon of Adrie」です。
エバドン（Ebadon）という小島に、リキドゥドゥ（Likidudu）という老婆と子供たちが暮らしていました。近くの茂みには恐ろしい怪物が潜んでいたため、老婆は子供たちに近づかないよう言い聞かせます。
しかし子供たちは言いつけを守らず、怪物をからかって遊びます。怒った怪物はとうとう、子供たち全員を一口で丸呑みにしてしまいました。
これを知ったリキドゥドゥは怪物に立ち向かいます。巨大なシャコガイの殻に怪物を叩きつけて殺し、飲み込まれていた子供たちを無事に救出。さらに怪物の身体を切り刻み、その残骸を海へ投げ捨てました。この出来事が、その海域を避けるようになった由来だと語られています。
切手の怪物は、西洋絵画に登場する角や翼を備えた悪魔とはまったく違います。黒く毛深い身体から細長い手足が伸びた、どこか原始的で奇妙な姿です。
ここで切手が用いる demon という英語も興味深いところです。これは必ずしもキリスト教の「悪魔」を意味するとは限りません。太平洋の島々にも、土地や海に結びついた怪物や精霊、恐ろしい超自然的存在が語り継がれており、それを英語で表現する際に demon と訳していると考えた方が自然でしょう。
そして、この感覚は意外にも『女神転生』とよく似ています。メガテンでいう「悪魔」も、サタンや堕天使だけではありません。神、妖精、鬼、精霊、妖怪、英雄、怪物まで、世界中の超自然的存在を大きく「悪魔」と呼んでいます。もしこの「Demon of Adrie」がメガテンに登場したら、いったいどんな種族になるのでしょうか。そんな想像をしながら見るのも、この切手の楽しみ方かもしれません。
エバドン島とアバドン――奇妙すぎる偶然
さらにメガテン好きなら、もう一つ気になるところがあります！
怪物が現れる島の名前は、Ebadon（エバドン）。
そしてメガテンには、おなじみの悪魔 Abaddon（アバドン） がいます。
もちろん、マーシャル諸島のEbadonは地名であり、『ヨハネの黙示録』に由来するAbaddonとは別物です。両者に神話的な関係があるわけではありません。ところが偶然は名前だけではありません。
アドリエの悪魔は、子供たちを一口で丸呑みします。そしてメガテンのアバドンといえば、巨大な口を備え、あらゆるものを呑み込んでしまいそうな異様な姿で知られる悪魔です。

まったく異なる文化から生まれた二つの存在が、名前と「丸呑み」という二重の偶然で重なってしまいました。
もちろん偶然にすぎません。しかし世界中の神話や民話を集めていくと、ときどきこんな不思議な出会いがあります。それもまた、切手から『女神転生』の世界をたどっていく面白さなのです。
Marshallese Folklore — Monsters, Legends, and a Demon of the Pacific
Beautiful women, warriors, mysterious monsters, and a child-swallowing “demon” inhabit the legends of the Marshall Islands.
Legends Born from the Islands and the Sea
The Marshall Islands preserve many traditional stories closely connected with the ocean, reefs, lagoons, animals, and the islands themselves. Rather than forming a vast genealogy of gods like Greek or Norse mythology, many Marshallese legends explain the landscape: why a pool exists, why islands lie far apart, or why people avoid a particular place in the sea.
A 1997 stamp sheet presents four such stories together with English text, making it almost a miniature illustrated book of Marshallese folklore. Among its characters are mysterious monsters that would not seem entirely out of place in the world of Shin Megami Tensei.
The Large Pool of Mejit — A Monster of the Land
According to the legend, an old couple once lived alone on Mejit Island. The old man noticed that a pool shining under the moonlight seemed to grow larger every night. When he secretly watched it, he discovered a huge monster enlarging the pool.
After the man threw a stone at it, the enraged creature chased him home. He hid behind the door and finally killed the monster with a spear when it tried to attack his wife. The pool supposedly remained as a reminder of the event.
The stamp shows a dark humanoid figure standing beside the water under the moon. It is not a famous god or named mythological being, but rather a mysterious creature intimately connected with a particular place. If it appeared in Shin Megami Tensei, the Jirae (Earth Spirit) race might be a surprisingly good fit: a local supernatural being capable of altering the landscape itself.
The Beautiful Woman of Kwajalein
Another legend explains why the islands of Kwajalein Atoll are separated from one another. Long ago, they were said to have been much closer together. Then a mysterious and exceptionally beautiful woman appeared.
The local leaders all desired her and became jealous of one another. Eventually, they caused their islands to move farther apart so that each could keep his distance from his rivals. Human jealousy thus becomes a mythical explanation for the geography of the atoll.
Sharks and Lowakalle Reef
Lowakalle was a powerful warrior who eventually became a feared raider, attacking his own people, stealing their possessions, and killing others.
The islanders devised a plan to defeat him. They scattered pieces of fish in the sea, attracting numerous sharks. Unaware of the trap, Lowakalle entered the water and was killed by the sharks. According to the legend, the place later became known as Lowakalle Reef.
Here, the supernatural is less important than the sea itself: the sharks and ocean become the forces that finally punish a violent man.
The Demon of Adrie — A Pacific “Demon”
The strangest of the four stories is The Demon of Adrie.
An old woman named Likidudu lived with her children on the small islet of Ebadon. A frightening creature lurked nearby, and she warned the children to stay away from it. They ignored her warning and repeatedly teased the monster.
Eventually, the creature became furious and swallowed all the children in a single gulp.
Likidudu fought back, killing the monster by striking it against a giant clam shell. She rescued the children unharmed, cut the creature into pieces, and threw its remains into the sea. The story became associated with a place that Marshallese people were said to avoid.
The word “demon” is particularly interesting. The creature does not resemble the horned demons of Christian or European tradition. Pacific island cultures have their own supernatural beings, monsters, and spirits connected with particular places and natural phenomena. Translating such a being as “demon” does not necessarily make it equivalent to a Christian demon.
In this respect, the story fits surprisingly well with Shin Megami Tensei. In Megaten, “demons” include far more than devils and fallen angels: gods, fairies, spirits, ghosts, monsters, heroes, and supernatural beings from cultures around the world can all become Demons and potential allies.
Ebadon and Abaddon — A Strange Coincidence
There is one final coincidence that Megaten fans may notice. The island where the story takes place is called Ebadon, remarkably similar to Abaddon, the biblical being who appears as a Demon in Shin Megami Tensei.
There is no known mythological connection between the Marshallese place name Ebadon and the biblical Abaddon. Yet the coincidence goes one step further.
The Demon of Adrie swallows people whole, while Megaten’s Abaddon is famously depicted as a grotesque creature dominated by an enormous mouth, seemingly capable of devouring almost anything.
An Ebadon monster that swallows humans whole, and an Abaddon with a gigantic mouth — two unrelated traditions unexpectedly meet through both a name and an image. Discovering such strange connections is one of the pleasures of exploring mythology and folklore through stamps and Shin Megami Tensei.
