　－月光に孤高を宿す狩猟の女神――純潔と野性を貫く銀弓の守護者－

 アルテミスは、ギリシャ神話における狩猟と月、自然を司る女神です。アポロンの双子の姉として知られ、森や野生動物、若き乙女たちの守護神として崇拝されました。
 一方で、誇り高く厳格な性格を持ち、神々ですら畏れる存在として数々の神話に登場します。
 『女神転生』シリーズでも古くから人気の女神であり、ローマ神話で同一視される"ダイアナ"としても、弓や月を象徴する美しい存在として描かれてきました。
　さらに『真・女神転生Ⅴ Vengeance』では、それまでとは大きく異なる幻想的な美少女デザインとなり、強力なスキルも相まって人気キャラクターとなっています。

メガテンと神話におけるアルテミス

　アルテミスはギリシャ神話におけるオリュンポス十二神の一柱であり、狩猟・月・自然・純潔を司る女神です。父は最高神ゼウス、母は女神レトで、太陽神アポロンとは双子の兄妹として知られています。森や山野を駆ける若き狩人の姿で描かれることが多く、弓矢を携え、鹿や猟犬を従えた神秘的な女神として古代ギリシャで広く信仰されました。また女性や子どもの守護神としての面も持ち、出産を助ける神格として崇敬されることもありました。
　ローマ神話のダイアナと同一視され、狩猟と自然を司る女神としてヨーロッパ各地で長く知られる存在です。

　彼女は非常に誇り高く、純潔を重んじる神として知られています。特に有名なのが狩人アクタイオンの神話です。アクタイオンは偶然、水浴びをしていたアルテミスの裸体を見てしまい、怒った女神によって鹿へと変えられてしまいます。そして彼は、自らの猟犬たちに追われ命を落としました。この神話は、アルテミスの厳格さと神聖性、そして神々への畏敬を象徴するエピソードとして知られています。またニオベの神話では、母レトを侮辱したニオベの子どもたちをアポロンと共に射抜き、神の尊厳を守る恐るべき力も示しました。

　アルテミスの象徴は月、銀の弓、鹿、糸杉などです。後の時代には月の女神セレネや魔術の女神ヘカテーと結びつき、「月の三女神」として語られることもありました。自然そのものの自由さと神聖さを体現する彼女は、人間文明から離れた森や山々の静寂を象徴する神でもありました。

　切手や美術作品においても、アルテミスは非常に人気の高い題材です。ギリシャ切手では古代壺絵風の姿で描かれ、古典的なギリシャ美術の雰囲気を伝えています。キプロス切手では古代彫像としてのアルテミス像が採用され、神殿信仰や古代宗教文化との結びつきが感じられます。またルクセンブルクの切手シートは、シネマティックでファンタジー溢れる現代的なビジュアルに仕上げられているのが非常に印象的です。アジュマン・マナマの美術切手では、西洋絵画に描かれた優雅なディアナ像として表現されており、狩猟神でありながら気高く美しい女性像として扱われている点が印象的です。こうした切手からは、アルテミスが単なる神話の存在ではなく、西洋文化における理想的な女性像や自然崇拝の象徴として受け継がれてきたことが分かります。

『女神転生』シリーズのアルテミスは、シリーズによってはダイアナとして登場し、異なる個性を持ちながらも、月や弓を思わせる神秘的な女神または地母神として描かれてきました。初期作品では比較的古典的なギリシャ神話風デザインでしたが、『真・女神転生Ⅴ Vengeance』では大胆に刷新され、幻想的でスタイリッシュな美少女として登場しています。そのデザインは従来のアルテミス像とは大きく異なりながらも、「孤高の女神」という本質を巧みに残しており、多くのプレイヤーに強い印象を与えました。さらに高性能なスキル構成や扱いやすさも評価され、戦力面でも人気の高い存在となっています。

“Artemis/Diana” in Shin Megami Tensei and Greek Mythology

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting, the moon, wilderness, and chastity.
She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. Revered as a protector of forests, wild animals, and young maidens, Artemis was one of the most respected deities in ancient Greece. She is usually depicted carrying a silver bow, accompanied by deer or hunting dogs.
In Roman mythology, Artemis was identified with Diana, goddess of the hunt and wilderness.

Artemis is also known for her strict pride and sacred purity. One of her most famous myths is the story of Actaeon, a hunter who accidentally witnessed the goddess bathing. Enraged, Artemis transformed him into a stag, causing him to be torn apart by his own hunting dogs. Another well-known myth tells how she and Apollo punished the children of Niobe after their mother insulted Leto. These stories highlight both her beauty and terrifying divine authority.

Her symbols include the moon, silver bow, deer, and cypress tree. In later traditions she became associated with Selene and Hecate as part of the “triple moon goddess.”She came to symbolize untouched nature and sacred freedom beyond human civilization.

Artemis has appeared on many stamps and works of art around the world. Greek stamps often depict her in the style of ancient vase paintings, while Cypriot issues portray classical statues connected to ancient temple worship. Ajman and Manama art stamps feature elegant Renaissance-style paintings of Diana, emphasizing both her beauty and noble character. These philatelic works show how Artemis has remained an enduring symbol of nature, femininity, and classical mythology.

In the Shin Megami Tensei series, Artemis is portrayed as a mysterious moon goddess associated with archery and grace. In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, however, she received a dramatically redesigned appearance as a stylish and fantasy-like beautiful girl character. Combined with her excellent battle skills and unique visual style, she became one of the most popular goddess characters in the game.
