中国神話の世界は、古代伝説・道教思想・仏教信仰・民間伝承が重なり合いながら形づくられてきました。天地創造の神話、霊獣信仰、仙人思想、英雄譚が融合し、宇宙の秩序や人間の理想像を語り継いでいます。
四神（青龍・白虎・朱雀・玄武）は方位と宇宙の調和を象徴し、風水や都市設計の思想にも影響を与えました。鳳凰のような瑞鳥や、不老不死を象徴する仙女麻姑は、吉祥・長寿への願いを体現しています。
文明の祖とされる黄帝、忠義の象徴として神格化された関帝聖君、悪鬼を祓う鍾馗は、国家的象徴から庶民信仰まで広く浸透しています。
文学の世界では『西遊記』の孫悟空や三蔵法師一行が、修行と悟りへの旅を通して神話的宇宙観を身近な物語として伝えました。またまた、美貌を隠す仮面で戦ったと伝えられる蘭陵王のような歴史的人物も、伝説化され神秘的英雄像として語り継がれています。
これら多彩な存在は中国各地の切手や美術意匠にも描かれ、文化的象徴として受け継がれてきました。
そして『女神転生』シリーズでは、神獣・仙人・魔王として再解釈され、古代神話のイメージは現代のポップカルチャーの中で新たな生命を得ています。
